Statement on the Start of Ramadan

As-Salaamu-Alaikum!

As you may be aware, the hilal (new crescent moon) beginning the month of Sha’ban was sighted throughout the world and in North America on the night of March 25, 2020. Current astronomical projections indicate there is a slight possibility of sighting the hilal (with the naked eye) beginning the month of Ramadan, in the South, Southwest, and Western sections of United States, on Thursday evening, April 23rd. However, the strongest possibility of sighting the hilal (throughout the entire continental USA) is on Friday evening, April 24th.

By tradition, Muslims around the world, including North America, will be searching for the hilal starting Thursday evening, April 23rd. If the moon is sighted with the naked eye in your area, please contact your local Imam who should then notify their Section Convener with the details of the sighting. We will announce sightings on our website: www.iwdmcommunity.com.

If a credible eye sighting (including picture, location, and person) occurs on Thursday night (April 23rd) within the continental USA, the first day of fasting will start on Friday, April 24th. However, if no sighting occurs within the continental USA by 12:00 midnight Eastern time, the first night of Ramadan will automatically be Friday, April 24th, and Saturday, April 25th will be the first of day fasting.

The Section Conveners of Imams associated with the Community of Imam W. Deen Mohammed adhere to the general principle of local sighting (within the continental USA) with the naked eye. We also use Allah’s gift of science to help pinpoint when and where naked eye sightings are most probable to occur.

Wherever Muslims are in the world, we pray that you have a blessed and beneficial Ramadan!

Ramadan Mubarak!!!
